A 'cyberstalking cult' swatted this Milwaukee couple 55 times

Patrick Tomlinson and Nikki Robinson were recently awarded a $575,000 settlement after suing the city of Milwaukee for sending heavily-armed police officers to search their home with guns drawn — despite knowing that it was an ongoing pattern of online harassment. Patrick Tomlinson and his wife Nikki Robinson are victims of "swatting," a crime where perpetrators create false reports of violent crime to trigger a major police response. The Milwaukee couple were swatted 55 times over a two-and-a-half year period, and were recently awarded a $575,000 settlement after suing the city of Milwaukee for sending heavily-armed police officers to their home despite knowing about the pattern of swatting. These incidents were part of a years-long cyberstalking campaign by an anonymous online group. Tomlison and Robinson have been stalked, bullied, and impersonated, with their harassers also sending racist and homophobic messages and bomb threats in their name. Robert D'Ovidio, associate professor of criminology and justice studies at Drexel University, said that perpetrators are increasingly using multiple platforms to control their behavior.
