The World Series horde means big business for St. Petersburg
Central Avenue near Tropicana Field was buzzing before the first Rays home game in the Fall Classic. And it wasn't just Rays fans. Several Brewers backers said it was cheaper to fly and stay here for a game than buy tickets back home. The Tampa Bay Rays are hosting the World Series in St. Petersburg, attracting hundreds of baseball fans, both local and from the Milwaukee area, as well as Milwaukee Brewers fans. The Moxy St. Pete Downtown hotel has seen an increase in hotel stays since the team clinched a playoff berth, with Sophie Lenzie working at the Moxy stating they're "in denial" about the team leaving for a new stadium in Tampa. Several nearby restaurant owners have also noticed a significant increase in foot traffic. Ben Ives from Rhinelander, Wis., said it was cheaper to pay the airfare, hotel and game tickets in St Petersburg than paying $3,500 for standing-room only tickets back home.
