Copper wire stolen from Milwaukee streetlights, 3 men charged
City officials said the theft of copper wire from Milwaukee streetlights has cost the city more than $830,000 over roughly the past two years. Prosecutors have charged three men in connection to the theft of approximately $10,000 worth of copper wire from Milwaukee's streetlight circuit system. The thefts, which have cost the city over $830,000, have taken place over the past two years, according to Department of Public Works commissioner Jerrel Kurschke. The city has experienced nearly 250 thefts, doubling the amount of work electricians have to do to repair. The Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office has charged Alvin Harris, Daryll Horton and 55-year-old Mario Gill with multiple felonies in separate cases. Court filings indicate Harris was involved in two copper wire thefts, Horton was involved three and Gill was involved one. The suspects would open ground vault junction boxes to access underground cables and access panels at the base of the light poles to reach the wire inside.
