After Baltimore Bridge Collapse, A Question: How Safe Are WI Bridges?

The catastrophic collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore on Tuesday is raising questions in Wisconsin and elsewhere. The collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore has raised questions about the safety of bridges in Wisconsin, following a federal Transportation Department report last year that compared the condition of 14,412 bridges in the state. Of the total number of bridges, 7,358 are in good condition, 6,111 are fair condition, and 943 are in poor condition. This includes 3,591 that are part of the National Highway System and eligible for federal infrastructure money. Overall, more than 42,400 of the nation's roughly 621,500 bridges are rated in poor conditions, with about 4,450 of nearly 147,000 in the federal highway system rated as poor. Another report by the American Road and Transportation Builders Association found that 1 in 3 bridges should be repaired or replaced. Wisconsin ranks no. 23 in structurally deficient bridges.
