Wisconsin officials fix lead paint hazards at 99 Milwaukee schools
Officials say nearly 100 public schools in Wisconsin's largest city are now safe after months of urgent repairs to fix lead paint hazards . Officials in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, have completed urgent repairs to fix lead paint hazards at nearly 100 public schools after a student was diagnosed with elevated lead levels in 2025. The district spent about 10 months repairing and repainting older school buildings, covering roughly 7 million square feet, including 2,700 classrooms and shared spaces. The work was completed about two weeks ahead of a Dec. 31 deadline, and all affected buildings have now been inspected and cleared. The city estimates it spent at least $43 million on lead removal and safety upgrades. The effort began after a child was diagnosed and investigators traced the likely source to flaking paint in a basement bathroom at a school where lead paint was still legal.
