Should Highway 175/Stadium Freeway be converted to a boulevard? WisDOT seeking input

The freeway, also known as Wisconsin Highway 175, would be decommissioned between Wisconsin and Lisbon avenues. It's north of AmFam Field. State officials are considering the possible conversion of Milwaukee's Stadium Freeway into a four-lane boulevard, or Highway 175/Stadium Freeway, which would be decommissioned between Wisconsin and Lisbon avenues. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) is seeking public input on these proposals, with a May 30 deadline for comments. Supporters argue that the new boulevard would better connect neighborhoods on Milwaukee's west side that are separated by the freeway and allow for new housing, adding to the city's population and tax base. Opponents argue that a surface street would be congested due to the freeway's capacity for vehicles. A detailed traffic analysis is in the works. A final study could be conducted next spring to determine if WisDOT will seek state funding for the project.

Should Highway 175/Stadium Freeway be converted to a boulevard? WisDOT seeking input

State officials considering the possible conversion of a roughly 1.5-mile stretch of Milwaukee's Stadium Freeway into a four-lane boulevard are still seeking public input.

The freeway, also known as Wisconsin Highway 175, would be decommissioned between Wisconsin and Lisbon avenues under Wisconsin Department of Transportation proposals.

That work, if it receives state funding, is likely years from happening.

Meanwhile, WisDOT has set a May 30 deadline for the public to submit comments on several conceptual alternatives that were presented at an April 30 open house.

A new boulevard would better connect neighborhoods on Milwaukee's west side that are separated by the freeway. It also would accommodate pedestrians, cyclists and buses along with motorists, the proposal's supporters say.

Replacing the freeway with a street grid also would provide opportunities to develop new housing − adding to the city's population and its tax base. The conceptual plans show upward of 30 acres being made available for public space or development.

Opponents say a surface street would be congested. But WisDOT officials say the decommissioning plans may be feasible because the freeway appears to provide more capacity than needed for the number of vehicles that use the road. A detailed traffic analysis is in the works.

Stadium Freeway North, constructed in 1962, was part of a larger planned freeway network that wasn't built.

WisDOT is studying the freeway alternatives with officials from the Milwaukee Department of Public Works and Milwaukee County Department of Transportation.

After another public open house this winter, WisDOT will refine plans to two or three alternatives before issuing a final study next spring.

That could then be the basis for seeking state funding for the project.
