Green Bay school's bilingual kindergarten unites English, Spanish speakers
Doty Elementary's new bilingual kindergarten has English and Spanish-speaking kids learning side by side — with benefits that reach beyond class. Doty Elementary in Green Bay, Wisconsin, has introduced a two-way bilingual program for its kindergarten students, where English and Spanish-speaking children learn alongside each other and serve as second instructors for their peers. The new model was developed with the help of Northeast Wisconsin Latinx Rising, a nonprofit that developed the program. The students learn together, with fluent speakers of each language modeling for their classmates. The district has had bilingual classes since 1996 and plans to expand the program to all grades next year.
