The State of Politics: How The Tax Break for Data Centers Was Passed
$1.9 billion annual handout to massive tech companies quietly put into 2023-25 budget. The Tax Break for Data Centers was passed in 2023 by the Joint Finance Committee, which included an exemption from sales and use taxes for construction of data centers certified by the Wisconsin Economic Development Corp and the electricity those data centers use. The committee's amendment included $120 million for private schools over two years, $25 million for investment programs and $20 million for oral health care. However, this provision has become a controversial issue in the Nov. 3 election for governor and members of the Legislature. There are now calls to cancel the data center sales tax exemption for companies like Amazon, Microsoft, Google and Meta, which could cost the state nearly $40 billion building Wisconsin centers by 2028. The Republican candidate for governor, Congressman Tom Tiffany, and Democratic candidate for mayor, David Crowley, have both opposed the tax break.
