Toll Roads Becomes an Issue in Wisconsin’s Race for Governor
Democrat David Crowley open to consider it. Republican Tom Tiffany once pushed it, now says no. During their only debate for Governor of Wisconsin, Democrat David Crowley and Republican Tom Tiffany were asked about using tolls as a permanent source of road funding. While both men initially answered the question, both responded "no". This comes as part of a larger discussion about funding transportation. The state's current mix of funding sources is tenuous, relying on a combination of borrowing and budget transfers for transportation. An analysis by the Legislative Fiscal Bureau shows that Republicans under former Gov. Scott Walker used the state’s general fund to borrow nearly $743 million for roads and transfer another $531 million since Democratic Gov. Tony Evers took office in 2019. Both Crowley and Tiffany both oppose the return of gas tax indexing.
