Dan Campbell Should Have Kicked at the Packers' 6, and the Lions Nearly Paid for It Later
Dan Campbell's fourth-and-1 call at his own 24 drew the outrage, but passing on a short field goal at the Packers' 6 is what turned Sunday into a coin flip. Detroit Lions defeated the Green Bay Packers 20-17 in a walk-off game at Ford Field. However, head coach Dan Campbell's decision to not kick at the Packers' 6 left him almost paying for it later. This decision came with 4:53 left in a 17-17 game and came after Keisean Nixon dropped Jahmyr Gibbs for a 2-yard loss and Green Bay took over at the Detroit 22. The Lions' defense had been ranked last in yards allowed and had held Green Bay to 60 rushing yards. However the decision to punt away from the Packers’ 6 points was criticized by some, with Trey Smack's 43-yard field goal with 7:10 left.
