The event attracted 58 participating groups, 10 sponsors, and judges from as far away as San Francisco and Canada. Participants were encouraged to develop hardware-based projects inspired by social issues and causes important to them. The winning project was "Cold Guard," a hardware-inspired security tool developed by a team inspired by a recent cybersecurity breach involving European supermarket refrigerators. The organizers also highlighted the potential for hackathons to help students develop practical solutions. The hackathon was organized by two UW-GreenBay computer science organizations, 404 Network and Google Developer Group. With its inaugural event complete, organizers plan to make HackGB an annual competition at the STEM Innovation Center.
