The Taste of Black Milwaukee returns in 2024. Here's what you need to know

The Wisconsin Black Chamber of Commerce is kicking Milwaukee's summer off with the "Taste of Black Milwaukee" and the "Men Who Cook" competition. The Wisconsin Black Chamber of Commerce, Inc. and WJMR Jammin' 98.3 are hosting the Taste of Black Milwaukee event and the 22nd annual "Men Who Cook" competition in Milwaukee. The event is a time for local businesses and community members to unite over food, with Black restaurants, food vendors, and chefs showcasing their culinary skills. Proceeds from the event will benefit Camp "Xhongo Peace," an organization that provides boys and boys with opportunities to camp along the Mississippi River and help fathers build skills for their careers and well-being. Food tickets are $1 per sample or $20 to taste all available food. Additional charges will vary depending on the size of a larger dish. Attendees can also become a judge for the Men Who Cook competition, purchasing a "Sample All" ticket.

The Wisconsin Black Chamber of Commerce, Inc. and WJMR Jammin' 98.3 are getting back in the kitchen with the Taste of Black Milwaukee event and the 22nd annual, "Men Who Cook" competition.

Taste of Black Milwaukee featuring the Men Who Cook competition is a time for local businesses and community members to unite over food as Black restaurants, food vendors and chefs will showcase their culinary skills for attendees to enjoy.

Funds from the event will go to Camp "Xhongo Peace," which is an organization that gives hundreds of men and boys an opportunity to go camping along the Mississippi River and partake in camping activities that will foster skills like teamwork and exploring shared values.

Funds will also go towards My Father's House Inc., a nonprofit that helps fathers build the skills they need for their careers and well-being.

Here's what you need to know about this year's event.

When is the Taste of Black Milwaukee and "Men Who Cook" competition?

The Men Who Cook competition will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. followed by the Taste of Black Milwaukee, which will be from 2 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 15.

A live broadcast with WJMR Jammin' 98.3 will be from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Where is the Taste of Black Milwaukee and "Men Who Cook" competition held?

Both events will be hosted at the Wisconsin Black Chamber of Commerce, 2900 W. Vliet St.

How much are tickets?

Food tickets are $1 per sample or you can pay $20 to taste all available food. These tickets will allow you to taste test a small dish from a restaurant of your choice. Purchase tickets here.

If you would like to have a larger dish, additional charges will be added. Prices for this will vary by restaurant or vendor.

If you are an attendee interested in becoming a judge for the "Men Who Cook" competition, you must purchase a "Sample All" ticket, which is $20 per person. Purchase tickets here.

Who will be some of the participating restaurants?

Over 20 Black- owned restaurants and caterers will be featured in this year's events, according to Ruben Hopkins, CEO of the Wisconsin Black Chamber of Commerce. There will be soul food, traditional American, cultural cuisines, and other selections to sample.

Attendees will be able to sample and judge foods from celebrity chef, Fred Coleman from Season 7 of Fox's "MasterChef" and "Kitchen Connoisseurs."

How to become a judge for the Men Who Cook competition?

Anyone is welcome to be a judge during the competition. After purchasing a "Sample all" ticket, you must be sure to grab a scoresheet that will be used as you sample different dishes.

Be sure to turn in your scoresheet by 2 p.m. as this will determine who the winners will be.
